As we are getting closer to December and Christmas time I have been thinking about some fun things that we can do as a family. Especially since we have a toddler (he is 3), I want to make sure that things are fun and easy to do. I have put together a list of the five must do things for us this year. What is nice is that we are able to do them on the weekends and have some quality family time while we do them.
1. Hanging Ornaments
This is always something that is fun for us to do. I will admit though I have to hold back with being too OCD about how everything looks. This year is the first year Ray really helped hang ornaments. He had so much fun! Even though a lot of them ended up around the bottom of the tree. I did make sure to let him know that when I need to put presents under the tree I will have to move some of them. He is so obsessed right now with looking at himself in the bulbs. It is so funny and a great memory that we will have.
2. Going to A Santa House
In the town over from us there is a whole little house called the Santa House. It is filled with lots of moving trains and all sorts of things for kids to look at while they wait in line to see Santa. It reminds you of a little Santa’s workshop. This is by far one of our favorite places to take Ray to see Santa. I remember going to this same place when I was little and it was so much fun. When I was a kid we always made a night of it. We would go see Santa then drive around and look at Christmas lights while listening to Christmas music. It was so much fun. I hope to do that with Ray when he gets a little older. For now though we have learned that it is much better to go as early as possible. I would also recommend going early in the season and possibly on a week day. That way there isn’t a huge line and they can spend a little more time with Santa.
3. Going to a Reindeer Farm
This past weekend we went to a Reindeer farm that is by our house. They have a bunch of reindeer that the kids can feed and look at. We went on a day that Santa was there and were able to have breakfast with him. It was such a cute little place that was a lot of fun to go to. I know Ray had a lot of fun and was able to feed one of the big reindeer as well.
4. Baking Cookies
I always start baking Christmas cookies early. This way I am able to make up trays and give them out to the neighbors and to friends. The trick is to freeze some of them and get them out when making up the trays. Ray has always loved helping me bake cookies. This year we also made up cookies for Halloween which was a lot of fun. Just be mindful that you will have a little bit of a mess when you are done. Or that they will get bored about half way through. I always like to have an activity that he can do while I finish up.
5. Watching Christmas Movies
I love watching Christmas movies and this is something we try to do as a family. I have learned that as long as we make sure we have enough time to watch one before bedtime it is easy to do. My trick is to do dinner a little early then have him take a bath and get pajamas on before we even start one. Normally we do not let Ray watch tv right before bed but during the holidays we make an exception. Check out my 25 days of family friendly Christmas movies for some great ideas of things to watch.
What are some other things that you like to do with your kids around Christmas time? I would love to hear some of your must dos!
