A couple months ago I bought some canvas boards with the thought that I would do something with them for the house. One day Ray really wanted to paint so I thought that was the perfect time to put at least one of those canvases to good use.
First we started out painting the entire canvas blue. I had some acrylic paint left over from different projects that I have done. We used three different shades of blue, a blue-green color, and white so that it looked like water. I put all the colors out on a plate and let Ray have some fun. All I told him was that he had to cover the whole thing with paint. This was the perfect little painting project for him and he had a lot of fun learning how to do it and knowing that this painting would be in his room eventually.
Then I went online and found a silhouette picture of a turtle. I print off a couple different ones and let Ray pick out the one that he liked the best. He picked the most difficult one, can you believe that! It was the one that looked really cool though. After we picked out the one that we wanted to put on the board I had to figure out a way to transfer the image onto the canvas. I first traced the image with tracing paper and a pencil. Then I had to trace the back of it so that I had pencil lead on the backside. This way my picture would not be reversed on the canvas. If I would have thought about it I should have print out the reverse and then I would have only had to trace it once. Or you can always buy transfer paper at craft stores that makes it really easy to transfer pictures onto things, however, I didn’t have any at the time so I just used what I had. I would recommend using a transfer paper in a white or a dark black because my pencil lead was somewhat difficult to see on the blue background.
After that I painted the image of the turtle onto the canvas with a black acrylic paint. Over all I am pretty happy with how the image turned out and Ray is really excited that he got to help make a picture for his room. I am hoping to make some other pieces similar to this one for our house but that might be a winter project for me.
